Prince William Conservation Alliance Hosts “People Who Make a Difference” Awards Ceremony
Honoring Community Champions Giuseppe’s Ristorante Italiano, Judy Gallagher, Joyce Hudson, and Julie Flanagan
June 24, 2024 – Prince William County, VA: The Prince William Conservation Alliance held its annual “People Who Make a Difference” Awards on Saturday, June 22. This year’s event celebrated four outstanding community members whose dedication and actions have significantly contributed to the preservation and enhancement of our local environment. The awards honor individuals who exemplify one of our core tenets: People who care, make a difference.
The honorees for 2024 are:
- Giuseppe’s Ristorante Italiano – Recognized for being an incredible community partner over the years, Giuseppe’s has consistently supported local events and initiatives, providing space and sponsorship to foster community gatherings and environmental stewardship.
- Judy Gallagher – Celebrated for her exceptional work in connecting people to the often-overlooked world of insects. Judy’s stunning photography has been featured in educational documents and field guides nationwide, helping to educate and inspire a greater appreciation for these vital creatures. If we don’t have insects, we don’t have anything else.
- Joyce Hudson – Honored for her tireless efforts to protect The Settlement from the threat of a Dominion transmission line. Despite having no prior knowledge of transmission lines, Joyce educated herself and her community, ultimately organizing a successful campaign and defeated the proposed transmission line.
- Julie Flanagan – Acknowledged for her dedication to preserving mature trees and reforesting lands throughout the county. As the county arborist, Julie’s advocacy and educational efforts have been instrumental in highlighting the importance of trees to local officials and the broader community.
By taking action from a place of caring and compassion, their efforts are driven not by a guaranteed outcome or a desire to win, but by the conviction and grit of doing the right thing.
“These places, your homes, your neighborhoods, this land, and the nature around us don’t have a voice. But we do. And these are people who use their voice to make this community better,” said Ashley Studholme, Executive Director of the Prince William Conservation Alliance.
Their contributions to Prince William County are exceptional, and they remind us that you don’t need to be a superhero to make a difference. We all have the talent and courage to make an impact. We hope these awards and the accomplishments of our honorees inspire others to stand up for their communities and the natural world around us.
