Level of Service (LOS) - Calculate New Vehicle Trips per Day (VTD) for New Development Proposals

Prince William County evaluates the quality of its roads by Level of service (LOS) standards. These are based on volume to capacit ratio and delay. The standards are set by the Transportation Reseach Board's Highway Capacity Manual. Prince William County plans roads to operate at LOS D -- gridlock with any accident, 40 second delays -- or better.



How to Calculate Additional Vehicle Trips per Day (VTD) expected to Result from New Development
RESIDENTIAL
Single Family Detached Homes 10 vehicle trips per day X number of homes
Single Family Attached Homes 8.7 vehicle trips per day X number of homes
Multi Family Homes 6 vehicle trips per day X number of homes
COMMERCIAL
Office Park 1.5 vehicle trips per day X every 1,000 square feet
General Light Industrial 9.5 vehicle trips per day X each 1,000 square feet
General Heavy Industrial 6.8 vehicle trips per day X every 1,000 square feet
Shopping Centers/Retail 3.74 vehicle trips per day for every 1,000 square feet
